Italy Family Bike & More

Cycling the green heart of Umbria… mystical hill towns and medieval fortresses amid the olives, dazzling sunflowers and gentle green vineyards. With its laid back biking, mouth-watering food and breathtaking landscape, this gorgeous region bordering Tuscany immerses you and your whole family in the best of Italian life; simple pleasures such as a gelato (or Aperol Spritz!) in the piazza, to a tour of the 14th century frescoes in the Basilica of Saint Francis, to a room with a view in a 15th century villa. For the kids (and grownups too!) there is even a guided tour of the Perugina factory, home to the world famous Baci chocolates (complete with samples, of course).

Located between Florence and Rome among silver green olive trees, majestic Roman pines and sloping vineyards, Tuscany's nearby neighbor is undiscovered by many. Home to stunning hill towns and magnificent fortresses, Umbria harks back to its powerful medieval days. As we pedal through fabled towns and by frescoes and palaces of centuries past, Umbria promises an unforgettable Italian biking adventure for all ages and cycling levels.

DAY 1 – Todi

We begin just outside the beautiful little town of Todi, founded by the Etruscans and a prosperous center in Roman Ages. Our warm up ride leads us into the village, where we admire the medieval Church of San Fortunato and share a gelato -- or cappuccino -- with the signori lingering in the piazza.

Accommodation: Relais Todini, an historically registered residence in Todi. Welcome dinner: at one of our favorite restaurants in Italy.

DAY 2 – Torgiano

We pass golden wheat fields and brilliant patches of sunflowers as we descend into the Tiber River Valley. Our ride through the Rubesco vineyards finishes in Torgiano where we enjoy a private tasting of Brezza and Torre di Giano from the famous Lungarotti estate. Ricotta and zucchini flowers, risotto with Rubesco and stringozzi with walnuts and gorgonzola highlight the menu at tonight’s unforgettable dinner.

Accommodation: Hotel Le Tre Vaselle, a 5 star hotel in Torgiano with an elegant mix of wooden beams, period furniture and terracotta floors. Dinner: at the hotel's renowned restaurant.

DAY 3 - Perugia (chocolate factory) - Assisi

We take a break from biking today for some very special excursions in this most amazing area. First, it's every kid's fantasy and every adult chocoholic's dream as we visit the Perugina factory in Perugia, home of the delectable and world famous Baci chocolates (while Perugina makes other products, Baci are the number one best seller, and are produced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, closing only for Christmas, New Year's and Easter). As soon as we enter the smell of fresh chocolate envelops us like a warm blanket, whetting our appetite for all the free samples on offer throughout this fascinating, fun and informative tour. The only problem is that we just may be spoiled for life as we will never taste fresher Baci than these.

Afterward, it's on to the pink-hued city of Assisi, one of the most legendary medieval towns in Italy. After lunch we enjoy a walking tour with a licensed local historian that will leave even the youngest in our group captivated and amazed. Tops on the list are the imposing Basilica of St. Francis and the pagan Temple of Minerva. Later, we may opt to wander through the hidden village of Spello, a picture perfect town with cobblestone streets and Renaissance chapels, before returning to Torgiano by van.

Accommodation: Le Tre Vaselle in Torgiano. Dinner: on your own.

DAY 4 – Deruta, Bevagna

An easy ride to the village of Deruta to visit a local family-run majolica ceramic workshop. A genuine historical and cultural gem, it is not to be missed. We'll be taken on a tour through the workshop, meet the artisans and even try our hand at the potter's wheel as we learn the rich history of this exceptional hand painted pottery that dates back to Etruscan times.

Afterward, it's back on our bikes to cycle through fields and small villages, deeper into the green heart of Italy. A fascinating town filled with Romanesque churches, cafes and a medieval fountain, Bevagna is our final destination.

Accommodation:Hotel Orto deli Angeli in Bevagna; Francesco and Tiziana welcome us into their family’s 15th century estate nestled in the heart of town (other options are available if you prefer a hotel with pool). Farewell dinner: at a very special favorite in the village.

A short early morning farewell ride up through the vineyards of Montefalco, looping back into Bevagana. This is the region's spectacular wine country; bright green in the spring and bursting with grapes in summer and fall. Afterward, we transfer by van back to Florence.
